Meet Our Coaches
Devan Godfrey
Devan Godfrey has being rowing at the Rowing Club of the Woodlands for past 5 years.
He is one of the most successful singles rower to have ever come through the Central Region – becoming only the second person to win back to back US Rowing Youth National Championships. Devan finished 8th in the 2021 Youth National Championship and went on to win the title in 2022 and 2023. He also stroked the Men’s U19 Quad to an A-Final in 2023.
In 2022 he finished second at the Head of the Charles, after starting 37th and returned in 2023 to win the men’s U19 single event.
Devan is a senior at The Collage Park of the Woodlands High School, and has been recruited by University of Washington starting in the fall of 2024.
Joe Flynn
Coach Joe Flynn came to RCTW in 2016 with a lifetime of rowing experience. He started rowing in high school in Oakland, California at Skyline High School. All the high schools in Oakland had crew as a varsity “letter sport” and he loved everything about crew. Joe attended and rowed at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa California for Coach David Grant (USRowing Medal of Honor 2019) before attending, rowing, and graduating from The University of California, Berkeley.
After graduation from Berkeley, he returned to Orange Coast to coach with Dave Grant for three years. Returning to the Bay Area, he taught at Skyline High School and coached their crew and taught Civics, US History, and Psychology for six years before changing careers and focusing on information technology with the world’s largest banks and energy companies for the next forty years including Bank of America, Citi, and Reliant Energy.
He continues to consult with GLG in Austin TX. Joe is a level 2 USRowing Coach. He served on the USRowing Board of Directors following the Rio Olympics 2016-18 and continues to work with USRowing and is on the Board of Directors of The Casitas Fund focused on US Rowing Projects. Joe recently completed 1 Million Meters rowed at RowHouse Hughes Landing in January. His next goal of 2 Million meters rowed is in progress. 2 Million Meters!
