Want to try rowing? RCTW's introduction to rowing course is the place to start.

The program will consist of four or five sessions and will introduce you to sculling. You will learn how to stay safe on the water, the basics of the rowing stroke and the fundamentals on rowing equipment, and boathouse safety etiquette. Participants will be coached in small groups or individuals both on the water in boats and on indoor rowing machines.

RCTW offers Introduction to rowing courses throughout the year.  After the 4 introduction sessions, individuals have the opportunity to join the adult program and become a member of RCTW.  This allows the opportunity to work together with skilled rowers to develop and improve their techniques and abilities.

Classes will run pending recommendations from US Rowing regarding gatherings and sports activities. If you are interested in attending, please email  woodlandsrowing@gmail.com for more information before registering.

Note: Courses are currently limited to 2-4 rowers.

What You'll Learn

The course is designed to get you on the water and rowing. Course topics include rowing safety, equipment handling, terminology, and of course rowing technique! Participants learn to row in our fleet of boats and all equipment is provided. RCTW has a professional coaching staff that will teach you the basics of rowing so you can feel confident on the water. RCTW members also volunteer in the boat with you so you can learn from rowers with on-the-water experience. From the dock to the lake, our instructors are with you every step of the way. After completing the course, you will be eligible to join our Masters Program.

What You'll Need to Bring

Participants should wear comfortable but tight-fitting clothing, such as cycling shorts or long leggings and athletic tops. Loose-fitting clothing is not recommended because it may become tangled in the rowing equipment. Our boats have built-in shoes, so you can wear sandals, tennis shoes or other footwear to class but you need to bring socks. Bring an extra pair of socks with you in case yours get wet or you need extra cushion. In hot weather, use sunscreen, hats, or visors. In cool weather, wear layers of close-fitting garments. Always bring water in non-breakable bottles to your course – you will have water breaks throughout the course.

Requirements

Rowers must be able to swim/tread water in open water conditions and have the ability to swim 300m in 50 deg temperature.

All RCTW waivers and forms must be completed, signed, and returned via email or hand in at the first session.

Physical requirements: to row a boat you must be able to get it to the water!  A boat is about 35 pounds; therefore, you must be able to lift 35 pounds straight over your head. For safety reasons, you will be asked to perform this at orientation.

Before You Arrive

Wear athletic clothing, preferably shorts or spandex along with a T-shirt that you don’t mind getting a little dirty/wet. Bring a hat, socks, and sneakers each day (you will be introduced to the rowing machines known as ‘ergs’).

Bring a water bottle (plastic only, no stainless steel or metal flask type bottles as they damage the boats).

Be sure to come with a good attitude and be coachable! Rowing is the ultimate team sport and will be unlike anything you’ve ever tried. Get ready to have fun!

Attendance, Cancellation and Refunds

Attendance at all sessions is very important. Please contact us if your schedule changes, it may be possible to apply your fee to another class, depending on availability.  However, RCTW does NOT provide refunds for any reason.
