Jay moved to the Woodlands in 1989 when the Woodlands Rowing Club (WRC) was forming and learned to row on Lake Woodlands.  At the time, WRC boasted one recreational single, no dock, no boathouse, and a handful of members (including Walter Brown).  Rowing provided Jay a great opportunity for exercise, regattas, and meeting people including his future wife.  WRC and RCTW consumed most of his free time while supporting various club activities including Learn to Row, spring & fall regattas, President, boathouse relocation coordinator (i.e. coordinated boathouse relocation into Northshore Park with Parks & Rec and The Woodlands Development Company), and spouse of WRC/RCTW’s first Junior’s coach.  Jay and Leann moved out of state in 2003, returning about 10 years later.
