The Rowing Club of The Woodlands (RCTW) proudly reports
unprecedented success at the Texas State Championships outside of Waco, Texas,
on April 22, 2023. Thirty-nine student athletes from The Woodlands and
surrounding areas participated, earning medals in sixteen events.
16 state champions
Director of Rowing and Head Coach Troy Howell, Coach Joe Flynn, Coach Magdalena Pillow, and the team returned to the Woodforest Bank Boathouse with six state championship titles and the team sculling points trophy, a first in RCTW’s 34-year history. These six trophies represent the accomplishments of sixteen athletes, won in the categories of the women’s u17 quad and the men’s 1V, 2V, and u17 quads, 1V double, and the single.
Three RCTW rowers are now state champions in two events. Team captain Ayden Ressler shared wins in the men’s 1V quad and double with fellow senior Max Hinkle. National champion Devan Godfrey shared the 1V quad win and continued his dominance in the men’s single. A total of twelve athletes earned medals in two events each.
RCTW entered all eight of the coxless quad events and medaled in all eight as well, winning four of the events. 34 of the 39 athletes returned home with at least one medal, and all enjoyed the opportunity to race. RCTW recognizes Luke Walton’s efforts and the Waco Rowing Center’s excellence in organizing and hosting the 2023 State Championships.
The Woodlands team continues to train six days a week on Lake
Woodlands, preparing for the Central Youth Championships in Oklahoma
City and Nationals in Sarasota, Florida. RCTW looks forward to sharing
the sport of rowing with the community on June 3rd, 2023, in honor of
National Learn to Row Day. Find the details of RCTW’s student and adult
